Heya!!
Happy Sunday from the future:)
I am missing all you guys like crazy, and having a wonderful time. I am obviously behind in keeping you up to date on my life..so here we go friends!
The Adventure to Picton to catch the Ferry:
Jo and I woke up early to go into town for some last minute. I stopped into my work to give them back my work shirts (somehow I ended up with 3??) and apron. I said goodbye to everyone again. It's weird how you can get so close to some people so fast, when you see them everyday. My favorite is a girl named Nicole. She is from Fiji, and we spent many nights after work having our "Staffie" talking life and dreams. She is a cool chick.
So we get back to the house and are pretty much all packed. We asked Kris if he had a piece of cardboard to make our "Picton" sign. He gave me a big piece and I wrote our destination on it. Stefan, a really nice guy I worked with then showed up. He was driving us to a spot that we could hitch hike from. (Mom is cringing right now) He drove us a little past the spot he was originally going to take us, as there were a few other hitchers at the one spot and we didn't want any competition...hahaha. Even typing that just sounds funny. So he dropped us off and we started. This was Joanne's first time hitching (fresh meat) so she was like "maybe if we keep our big pack on they will feel sorry for us and pull over?". hahaha. I was like if you want to do that it's fine, but mine is heavy. We stood there for about an hour and a bit. It's funny when people drive by. It's almost like they feel bad so they wave, or point in some other direction, as in to say "I am not going where you are going". Joanne was getting frustrated, but I knew that it was just timing.
So this guy pulls over in a Ford sports car. (no, not a mustang..I am not that dumb) I had never seen one of these before, but he told us it has a V8 in it so it MUST be cool..haha. His name was Guy and he was really nice! He took us for ice cream on the way, and anytime there was a cool view that we wanted a photo of he pulled over for us so we could snap a photo. He told us all about his wife and daughters. When we got into Picton we had some time before the Ferry so he took us to meet his wife at the restaurant that she worked at. He has 3 daughters and one of them was actually coming off the Ferry the same time we were headed on so the timing was great! When he found out that it was my birthday in a few days he went and got me a bottle of wine to drink on it! Wow...we lucked out big time. I can say though that I am done with hitch hiking. I feel I have had many good experiences doing it, but I know there is still a risk always involved. I will leave it on a high note and say that I did it, I experienced it, and I am over it :)
So the Ferry was cool. Jo and I watched a movie and before we knew it we were in Wellington! I tried to go out on the boat a few times to snap a pic of the sunset, but it was SOOO windy that I retreated back inside to safety.
Once we got off the boat we went to our hostel. It was a Base X hostel (they are a chain out here) and our room was a 4 bed dorm. We decided that we would go and have 1 drink before bed (they always have backpackers specials) We went down to the Base X bar and ordered our drink. We sat down with a map of the North island and started going over all of the places that we wanted to see. That's when this guy came over and asked if he could sit with us...here we go..lol
So sometimes people have a hard time understanding Jo because of her "Tick" (Thick) Irish accent. This guy could not understand ANYTHING that she was saying. He would ask her a question, she would answer, he would look confused and say "Pardon"?..I would translate..haha. This went on for about 10 minutes. Jo was getting a bit frustrated by this, I could tell. So then something happened, and it literally happened in slow motion. I will reenact it below for you..ahahha
Guy: So what did you do in the South?
Jo: We both worked at a hostel and a bar
Guy: um.....pardon?
Me: (loud) we both worked at a hostel and var
Guy: ohhhh, very cool
Guy: So do you like Wellington
Jo: Yeah, it's pretty nice so far
Guy: "Ummm.....pardon"
Me: (loud) It's pretty nice so far- yes we like it
This is when it happened..and it happened in slow motion. I saw two hearing aids in his ears. Oh no. I realized that he must have a hearing issue, and RIGHT as I realized this, this happened....
Guy: So what are you doing tomorrow?
Jo: I think we are going to walk around and site see
Guy:Pardon
Jo: "Are you taking the Piss??" (that means are you joking with me) Can you not hear anything that I am saying??
Guy: No sorry, I am actually partially Deaf
Me: No one ever understands Jo's accent, so don't feel bad
Jo: (internally) ah crap....
Foot in Mouth
Luckily he was really nice and didn't get offended. Jo didn't mean to be rude, she just thought that he was making fun of not understanding her accent like I do :)
hehehe.
Learning lesson.
So we went out to an Irish bar the night I turned 30....*coughionlyact18cough* We met up with Jo's friend Emily from back home and she gave us soo many free drinks, which was amazing. The next day we were catching the bus at 6:00pm to Auckland, we we laid on the beach all day trying to get rid of the dirty hangover.
That being said, thank you ALL for the beautiful messages, emails, and photo's that you sent me on my birthday. Even though I was so far away from home, getting all of those messages made me feel super loved and not so homesick :) I missed partying with all of my ladies, but we will do a "re-do" when I get home..hehe. Nashville?? Vegas??
Ok I am going to shower and eat some breaky (aka peanut butter on a rice cake..hehe)
I will do another update soon! :)
Love you all to bits!!
