Oh Hostel Life….
So I decided to take the bus in to the city yesterday. I
didn’t realize that it was going to take me a million hours to get there (not
to self..take the train home..much faster and same price) I’m pretty sure the
bus driver wanted to punch me, as I was asking him every little while “is this
where I get off?”. I was worried I would miss it, and end up somewhere in
butt-fuck-nowhere.
The bus took about an hour and 20 minutes to get there, but
I think it was because I decided to plan my little adventure right at rush
hour, so there was a lot of stop and go traffic.
Once I got to the city I wanted to find somewhere to use
wifi (I had written yesterday’s post in the hostel and then just updated it
when I had internet) I do really love this hostel, but it is quite annoying
that there is no wifi. I found a little café and got a coffee. I forgot how
expensive it is here..wow. A black coffee…$5.00. Tim Hortons $1.80 coffee’s
just do not exist here. I started chatting online with a girl that I had me
through another friend (she also lives in the hostel and is the one that
actually recommended that I come and stay here) She said that two of her
friends from the hostel were also downtown, and that they would be on the
lookout for me. (good thing I am easy to spot in a crowd- especially in
China..I am pretty sure that they thought I was a redheaded Godzilla.) Anyways,
once I was done my coffee and using the wifi I started walking around and boom,
some guy was like “Emily?”. Haha- that didn’t take long. It was a guy named Adam
from the UK. He was super friendly and we chatted like we had been friends for
years. Then we met up with his friend Marty who is from Ireland. I walked
around with them for a while and then took the train back to the hostel with
them. Yay for making friends! Haha
When I got back to the hostel I went into the kitchen to
make myself a delicious Tuna-a-la-ricecake snack and met up with a girl named
Nicole that I had met the day before outside. (she had put a bunch of lemon
juice in her hair as she was trying to go blonde..please keep in mind that her
hair is dark brown J
) She was super friendly and we started chatting. She is from South Africa and
a real sweetheart. We chatted for a while and then I decided I would head down
to the beach. (Litterally a 5 minute walk….does it get any better?)
I got to the beach and it wasn’t too busy. I watched a
seagull sit beside this guy that was sleeping/suntanning and kept putting his
head into the guys cooler bag. Haha. It was pretty amusing to watch. It made me
think of the seagulls from Finding Nemo..and how he probably went home that day
and told all his seagull friends about this “stupid guy at the beach that left
his cooler bag open and I went in and ate all his lunch”..haha.
I few minutes later Nicole came down and met me and we sat
at the beach for a few hours having life chats. She is really great and an
amazing energy to be around. Once I was done with the beach I headed back to
the hostel to shower and wash my hair. (p.s this room has a bathroom in it! Which is amazing! Usually you have to do a haggard walk of shame down the hall trying not to drop your towel or your dirty undies..that would just be awkward)
Around 6:30 pm I was on the fence about going to bed. I was
sooo tired from being up so early, and almost couldn’t keep my eyes open.
That’s when there was a knock on the door, and to my surprise it was a girl
named Tegan that I had met through a friend (well we hadn’t met in person, just
chatted on facebook). She was next door
at the bar (yes- this hostel is sandwiched between a liquor store on one side,
and a huge bar on the other side..haha. scary). She was over there with a bunch
of people from her work and came over to see if I wanted to come over for a
drink. Awwww…so sweet!!! I went over with her and one of her co-workers bought
us each a drink (free drinks always taste better). I stayed for about an hour or so getting to know Tegan and
then headed back to the hostel. A bunch
of people were all in the courtyard drinking and wanted me to hang out, but I was way to tired. One of the girls in
my room Betty (she is from Paris) was leaving the next day, so her and Emilie
were packing her bags up. I just crawled up into bed (yes I am sleeping on the top bunk like a 12 year old) and passed out.
I got a list of a bunch of job placement agencies from
Tegan, so as soon as I have my phone hooked up I am going to hit the pavement
running looking for a job J
I think the hostel life is fun and amazing for meeting people, but I think
after a month of it I will be ready for my own room J
Anyways, I'm off to explore now! It's a beauty of a day :)
xoxo
